Goldie Hawn is remembering his late colleague and friend, Diane Keaton.
“Diane, we are not ready to lose you,” Hawn, 79, wrote via Instagram on Saturday, October 11, hours after news broke that the famous actress died in California at the age of 79.
“You left us a trail of fairy dust, full of specks of light and memories beyond imagination,” she continued in the caption, which was shared alongside a stunning black and white photo of Keaton in one of his iconic hats and scarves. “How do we say goodbye? What words can come to mind when your heart is breaking? You never liked compliments, so humble, but now you can’t tell me to ‘shut up’, darling. There has been, and will be, no one like you.”
She continued, “You stole the hearts of the world and shared your genius with millions, making films that made us laugh and cry in a way only you could. I was blessed to do First Wives Club with you, our days starting with coffee in the makeup trailer, laughing and joking, until the last day of filming. It was a rollercoaster of love.”
THE Overboard the actress went on to share the plans the two former co-stars had for their lives in the future.
“We agreed to grow old together and one day maybe live together with all of our girlfriends,” she continued in the touching social media post. “Well, we never lived together, but we grew old together. Who knows… maybe in the next life.”
She added: “Sparkle your fairy dust there, girlfriend. I’m going to miss you so much.”
News of Keaton’s death broke on Saturday, October 11. A spokesperson for her family told PEOPLE that the actress died at her home in California. No further information regarding his death was provided, as Keaton’s family has asked for privacy during this difficult time.
Keaton and Hawn, 79, starred in the 1996 film The First Wives Club next to Bette Midler. The trio played Elise Elliot (Hawn), Annie Paradis (Keaton) and Brenda Cushman (Midler). The film also starred Maggie Smith, Sarah Jessica Parker, Stockard Channing, Dan Hedaya, Victor Garber, Stephen Collins, Elizabeth Berkley and Marcia Gay Harden.
In 2015, Hawn explained why a sequel to the film was never produced, despite fans continually asking to see the trio back in action.
“We were all women of a certain age and everyone took a pay cut to do this so the studio could do what they needed to do,” she said. Harvard Business Review at the moment. “We all took a smaller-than-normal back-end and a much smaller front-end. And we ended up doing incredibly well. The movie was a huge success. It made a lot of money. We were on the cover of Time magazine.”
She continued: “But two years later, when the studio came back with a sequel, they wanted to offer us the exact same deal. We were back to ground zero. If three men had gone in there, they would have raised their salaries without even thinking about it. But the fear of women’s films is ingrained in the culture.”

However, things appeared to change in November 2020 when Hawn hinted at the possibility of the trio reuniting for a follow-up film.
“The script needs to be approved and now they’ve given us another draft, so I need to read it,” Hawn, 79, said. Entertainment tonight on November 18th. “So we’re slowly moving in that direction, let’s put it that way.”
The film, which was never made, would have starred the original trio of women, as well as their children and grandchildren, after the man they married dies in a department store. In 2024, Midler said People the film was in “development hell.”
“It’s in the abyss where all good scripts go to die,” she added. “Fifteen years is the time limit, I think. When it’s been in development for 15 years, you kind of give up.”
Midler paid tribute to Keaton on October 11. “The brilliant, beautiful and extraordinary Diane Keaton has died,” Midler, 79, wrote via Instagram. “I can’t tell you how unbearably sad this makes me.”
“She was hilarious, completely original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness you would expect from such a star,” Midler wrote. “What you saw was who she was… oh, la, lala!”
Hawn’s daughter, Kate Hudson, also paid tribute to her mother’s late co-star.
“We love you so much Diane ❤️🕊️,” she captioned a scene from The First Wives Club via Instagram the day Keaton’s death was announced.
