Expectations are rising for the next Black Jack and Paul Ruddremake led by Anaconda coming later this year, but as it turns out, it’s not the only giant snake movie coming out of the woodwork. Lionsgate recently acquired Silent Night, Deadly Night restart helmer Mike P. Nelsonnext movie, Titan – another story of an unfortunate group of people who encounter a snake beyond their imagination in the Amazon Rainforest. Compared to Black and Rudd’s effort, which turns into a comedic, campy meta-story about a team trying to remake the 1997 film Jennifer Lopez creature feature, only to find out the real deal, Nelson’s feature will provide a very different tone. In the eyes of Happy Day of Death star Jessica Rothein fact, it will be the perfect complement to what the snake movie has to offer.
Speaking with Collider’s Aidan Kelly for his Screamfest opening night film, AffectionRothe opened up about Titan in the context of Anaconda. His film is set along the Curuçá River in present-day Brazil, where a team of young doctors embarks on a humanitarian mission. Upon entering the Amazon, however, they discover that not everything welcomes their presence. This includes an ancient predator known as Boiúna fighting to rid the jungle of its would-be invaders and beginning a harrowing fight for the survival of humans who just wanted to bring aid to the area. It also features a talented horror cast surrounding Rothe, including Street of Fear trilogy star Kiana Madeira and To updateof Logan Marshall-Green.
Rothe made comparisons of Tony Giglio and Alan B. McElroythe story doesn’t only to the giant snake classic, but also to a certain William Friedkin thriller about four fugitives in South America escort a volatile shipment of nitroglycerin on a treacherous journey filled with guerrillas and unstable terrain. Titan promises to be the “bravest” alternative to the new Anacondashe said, even though she’s equally excited to see the funniest snake movie. From the cast to Nelson’s direction and the overall fun of filming, she’s confident her efforts can stand alongside Black and Rudd as something of their own.
“So what I think is really cool about ‘Titan’ and the ‘Anaconda’ reboot coming out at the same time is, I don’t know, I haven’t read the Anaconda reboot script, but it sounds like a goddamn blast. A comedy. Jack Black, Paul Rudd, give me more, I want all of that. I want to bathe in that. But our movie is much more like ‘Sorcerer’ met ‘Anaconda‘ then it’s brave and real. It’s about a group of doctors without borders who come down and spend a lot of time, and they just come across a force that they didn’t expect. And Mike. P. Nelson, our director, is just incredible, another incredible cast behind that, and so, I haven’t seen it yet, but all the things I’ve seen and even filming, we went to the Amazon to film. So I got to go on rainforest tours and go boating! So who doesn’t want to do that?
‘Affection’ takes Rothe into a new realm of sci-fi horror
The next big horror role for Rothe, Affectionplays with some familiar themes from his work in Happy death day films. Instead of navigating a bloody, repeating anniversary, however, she plays a mother tormented by a condition that continually resets her memory of her husband and daughter. Trapped in a nightmare of violent convulsions and a difficult memory that has made those closest to her seem like strangers, she tries to unravel the mystery behind her current existence before forgetting everything again. The film marks the cinema debut BT Meza and boasts a very lean cast, with only Lincolnof Jose Cruz and Scrapof Julianna Layne accompanying Rothe. While a date hasn’t been set for its release following its October 7 premiere at Screamfest, all indications are that it will be released not long after it plays through the remaining fall festivals.
