Although many know Diane Keaton as the iconic actress who conquered Hollywood with films like Annie Hall, Something has to give and the Godfather franchise, some fans are surprised to discover that she never married and became a mother in her 50s by adopting a daughter and a son. “Motherhood changed me completely,” Diane once said Monthly Movie. “It’s the most humiliating experience I’ve ever had.”
Even after winning an Oscar, two Golden Globes and the AFI Life Achievement Award, the First Wives Club star said she always knew there was more to life than acting and so she wanted to try being a mother. “It was more like a thought I had been thinking for a long time,” she said Online access in 2008. “So I took the plunge.”
Sadly, Diane died on October 11, 2025, at the age of 79.

Dexter Keaton
In 1996, Diane adopted Dexter, born a year earlier. The young beauty didn’t follow in her mother’s footsteps in Tinseltown, although she accompanied Diane on many red carpets. And the University of Arizona alum certainly gushes over her incredible mom, as she shared a photo of the pair on Mother’s Day 2014 with the caption, “I’m so grateful to have been adopted by such a strong, beautiful, and talented woman. I couldn’t thank you enough for everything you’ve done for me. I love you!”
Dexter also couldn’t wait to share the exciting news of his engagement via Instagram in November 2020. With a photo of his then-boyfriend Jordan White proposing on one knee, Dexter he wrote“This morning started with hail and ended with a diamond! I can’t believe I’m engaged! I love you, Jordan!”
The couple got married in June 2021 and photos of the beautiful nuptials were posted all over Dexter’s social media accounts. In one adorable photo, the newlyweds pose with Diane and Duke, with Dexter captioning it: “Family.” A source said Closer weekly that the marriage was “perfect”. “It was Dexie’s day and she was a beautiful bride,” the source added. “Diane cried, of course…she just can’t believe how time passes.”

Dexter’s younger brother, Duke, was welcomed into the family in 2001. Like his sister, Duke appears to keep a low profile and is a rather private person. Although he hasn’t sparked his mother’s interest in acting yet, he has rubbed elbows with celebrities by posting a super cute photo with Rita Ora and Cara Delevingne to your Instagram. He also appears to enjoy cooking, as he has shared several chef tutorials on social media, including one where he and a friend prepare steak and eggs for breakfast.
Another hobby of his seems to be photography, as he runs a separate Instagram account where he publishes his beautiful photos. The collection includes tropical landscapes, cityscapes and photos from his international travels. He has a lot of eyes! Diane must be happy, as she is a talented photographer herself, having published several books featuring her work. In a 2008 interview with Vanity FairDiane said her mother influenced her to pick up a camera. “She encouraged me to save photos. ‘Don’t forget,’ she would say. Photographs have a huge impact – more than words. They are so visceral and intense.’”
