Kantara: Chapter 1 (Hindi) saw a huge increase in business on its second Saturday. According to initial estimates, the film doubled its second Friday business on Saturday, grossing Rs. 13.50 crore net approx. The drop since the first Saturday is less than 30 percent, which is a stellar retention. The total for ten consecutive days is Rs. 122 crore net.
The second weekend is projected to raise Rs. 35 crore net, and the entire week will be comfortably over Rs. 50 crore net. The film will cost over Rs. 150 crore net after two weeks. On day one, this number seemed like a somewhat optimistic life total. However, the film has trended considerably better since then, avoiding big drops on weekdays and growing well on weekends or holidays. Now, it aims to reach probably around Rs. 200 crore net or more, although this requires good collection during and after the Diwali period. The way it’s been going so far, it’s not overtly optimistic to expect that to happen.
Expectations from the film were higher among a section of the trade who expected it to perform as sequels to other South Indian films like Baahubali 2, KGF 2 and Pushpa 2. While the trade talk was not completely unfounded, after all, the first film had a gravity-defying run, going from Rs. 1.25 crore opening day net to Rs. 80 crore plus final net. However, in the end, it was just talk. All talk aside, this is a period film set in the regional folklore of South India, with no face value, these numbers are impressive.
