Oscar-winning actress and Hollywood icon Diane Keaton has passed away at the age of 79. The Annie Hall star, known for her timeless charm, unique style and notable film career, died in California on Saturday, October 11, her family confirmed to PEOPLE.
Los Angeles-born Keaton rose to fame in the 1970s for her role as Kay Adams-Corleone in The Godfather films. She went on to star in classics like Annie Hall, Father of the Bride, First Wives Club and Something’s Gotta Give. For Annie Hall, she won the Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA for Best Actress. Over the course of his five-decade career, Keaton received three more Oscar nominations for Reds, Marvin’s Room and Something’s Gotta Give.
Despite her long career in Hollywood, Diane Keaton’s proudest role was as mother to her two adopted sons, Dexter and Duke.
Dexter Keaton White
Dexter Keaton White, born December 15, 1995, is Diane Keaton’s first adopted child. She married Jordan White in June 2021, and Diane was seen happily dancing with her daughter at the wedding, dressed in her signature white pantsuit and hat.
Dexter often shares heartfelt posts about his mother on Instagram. In a 2014 Mother’s Day post, she wrote, “I’m so grateful to have been adopted by such a strong, beautiful, and talented woman. I couldn’t thank you enough for everything you’ve done for me. I love you!”
She also shared photos from her childhood, including one with her brother Duke, writing, “Look, my mom isn’t wearing shoes, which isn’t unusual for her.” Dexter frequently supports his mother’s projects online, including Keaton’s book Fashion First.
Duke Keaton
Duke Keaton, born on February 8, 2000, is the second adopted son of Diane Keaton. He has demonstrated a passion for creativity and music, recently promoting his own single Passenger Princess. His biography on his official website describes him as “an American creative talent and public figure emerging from the Hollywood legacy.”
In 2022, Diane celebrated her son’s birthday on Instagram, writing: “HAPPY BIRTHDAY DUKE!!!” with a red heart emoji. Duke has also made appearances with his mother at film premieres and events. In 2009, the two were photographed laughing courtside at a Los Angeles Lakers game.
