No timeline was given for when Woods will return to competitive golf following the latest in a series of operations and injuries that have kept him inactive since last year’s British Open.
He suffered serious leg injuries in a car accident in 2021, but returned at the 2022 Masters and finished 47th.
Woods, who turns 50 in December, had back surgery last September. He was recovering from that setback when he announced last March that he had suffered a torn Achilles tendon.
There were spots available in his Hero World Challenge when the bulk of the field was announced last week, but the latest announcement puts an end to any notion that Woods could play in the Bahamas event.
He has won 82 PGA Tour titles, equaling Sam Snead for the all-time record, and is second on the list of all-time greatest victories, three short of the record 18 won by another American, Jack Nicklaus.
The surgery also calls into question whether Woods will play for his Jupiter Links team in the TGL tech golf league when the season begins in January.
